Christa Graf Christa came to Canada from Germany in December 1956. She studied drawing and painting at Northern Secondary School under Albert Jacques Franck and Don Fraser; then sculpture at Northern Secondary School under Frances Gage and Margaret Graeb and later at Central Technical School under Augustin Filipovic, Richard McNeill and Lanny Shereck. Has studied woodcarving with Warren Van Every and Frances Gage. Many summer vacations have been spent at the Schneider School of Fine Arts in Actinolite under such teachers as Mary Schneider, Jack Pepper, Jack Pollock, Adrian Dingle, Aba Bayefsky, Guttorn Otto, Don Fraser, Carl Schaefer and John Gould. Christa has exhibited paintings and sculpture in many successful one-woman shows as well as group shows; i.e. Toronto Mendelsohn Choir Art Sale, Grace Church On-The-Hill Art Sale, Beth Tikvah Sisterhood Art Sale, Colour and Form Society, Cliffcrest United Church Community Show, Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival, CNE Woodcarving Show, Lakefield Celebration of Fine Arts and the Art Guild of Scarborough. She has won many awards for her sculpture and her drawings. Her work is in private collections in Canada, USA, Germany, Spain and Morocco. From 1968 to 1971 she taught evening classes in elementary oil painting at Winston Churchill Collegiate in Scarborough. Since 1 979 Christa has concentrated mainly on sculpture and drawings, discovering a special love for wood in 1980. From then on wood sculpture would take up most of her time, with drawing and painting being put on the back burner. In 1995 Christa resumed painting, this time in acrylics and coloured pencils, and now divides her time 2/3 on wood and 1/3 on painting or drawing.
